Let’s talk about Toners today. Many people are still unaware of what a toner really is and many people still have misconceptions as to its true purpose. However, Toner is an essential part of their skincare routines. Currently, there are various kinds of toners in the market to address almost every skin concern and are no longer limited to treating acne and oily skin. Also, there are many tips and tricks of using toners. MACCARON is here to tell you how to use toners and their importance!
What’s a Toner?
A toner is a quick, absorbing liquid that helps to remove excess dirt, traces of oil, and makeup. It corrects and balances the pH of your skin, and helps control acne. On a makeup — related note, toner is like a primer for the rest of your skincare routine. It brings your skin back to its natural acidic state, sweeping impurities away and helping your skin absorb your skincare products.
Choosing a Toner for Your Skin Type
Since we use a toner every morning and evening(recommended to use twice in a day), it is very important to choose the right toner for your skin type. To do so, first, you should consider various factors such as whether your skin is oily, dry, troubled, or sensitive. It is also a good idea to have a variety of toners in stock and to choose a toner that fits each time depending on the season or skin condition. When applying toner, you should use it within three minutes after washing your face to prevent dry skin. When used with cotton pads, toner should be soaked in cotton enough, and then applied gently to the skin texture with your hands relaxed. If you apply it with your hands, rub your hands to create heat, and then apply toner with your palm to absorb toner, which doubles the moisturizing effect. When the skin is heated in summer, putting toner in the refrigerator helps to calm skin and lower skin temperature.
- Toner for oily skin
Since oily skin is highly sebum-producing, it is easy to get troubled skin as the sebum often remains in the pores even after washing. To prevent this from happening, it is recommended to adjust the oil and water balance with toner focusing on sebum reduction functions and cleansing skin wastes. It is also a good idea to use an oil-water balancing toner that contains tea tree oil or to keep a toner that has pore convergence function cool and wet enough on a cotton pad to use it as a pack-in area where pores are troubled.

2. Toner for dry skin
Dry skin with less moisture or sebum in the skin is recommended to use a moist toner with a large number of moisturizing ingredients. It is also important to apply a moist toner quickly within three minutes after washing your face. Dab the toner several times to absorb the toner into the skin, or soak the cotton pad with toner and place it on dry areas for a while to further enhance the moisturizing effect.
3. Toner for sensitive skin
If your skin is sensitive, or if you want to minimise irritation due to external stressors, fix your skin’s pH balance with a mild acidic toner with minimal ingredients after washing your face, and calm down the irritated skin. Wiping the skin’s texture strongly with a cotton pad or long-lasting dabbing and absorption can also irritate the skin, so don’t forget to moisten the cotton pad with enough toner and apply it gently with your hands relaxed.
4. Toner for exfoliation
The majority of toners are soaked in cotton pads and have the effect of cleansing the skin. However, if you usually have a lot of dead skin cells, we recommend using a toner with exfoliating functions that contain AHA and BHA components. This makes it easy to exfoliate without using a separate scrub product. However, for sensitive and dry skin, care should be taken for use. If you are worried about irritation, it is good to use toner only for areas where you are concerned about dead skin cells, or to use a toner like special care two to three times a week.
5. Toner for skin vitality
When waste and dead skin cells are not removed in time, the complexion naturally becomes dull. If you’re worried about a dull complexion, try the Brightening Toner. Antioxidants, arbutin, vitamin C and whitening functional plant extracts that Brightening Toner contains inhibits the activity of melanin cells.
This promotes skin regeneration, which makes melanin pigmentation lighter and brightens the skin tone. Since lack of moisture also causes a dull complexion, moisturizing after using a toner is also important. Thoroughly applying sunscreen and getting enough sleep are also important habits for clear and transparent skin.
