Can Blue Light Emitted From Mobile Phone & Laptop Screen Damage Your Skin?

Since the quarantine phase, on average, I am glued 8-9 hours of screen time on just my phone. Wait, wait, I’m not even counting my laptop screen time right now. Obviously, this led to some serious health and skin problems over the past few months including dry skin, headache, constant backache, dry patches, and trouble in concentration power. This problem is not just limited to me but almost everyone around me as they are too glued to their screens because of the lack of activities to do.

While studying the screen damage to my skin, I learned a new word- screenagers, people moving from one screen to another. Spending 8 hours on phone during leisure, another 2 hours binge-watching my favourite TV shows, or even worse scrolling through Instagram by bedtime, that’s what life has become. We rarely give our mind, eyes, and skin a chance to rest, and what’s, even more, scarier is that these screens produce blue light.

So What Exactly Is Blue Light?

Blue light is a short wavelength that is visible to the eye. It’s everywhere- in sun rays, in the atmosphere but the worst is it’s emitted from digital devices and screens. Well, if you weren’t worried about the amount of time you spend on your screen, so now you should. Not only it affects our eyes, but it damages your skin as well. To put it simple and short, blue light is a light that’s emitted from electronic gadgets.

If we roughly estimate, we spend 50% of our lives staring at screens be it either our phones, laptop, or television. Especially during the COVID-19 times, like us, you must also have been spending more time indoors and in front of screens than normal. To name a few of the common sources of blue light are laptop screens, phones, tablets, televisions, and light bulbs (a certain type). Believe it or not, blue light emits higher levels of light as compared to the sunlight. Not only does it take a toll on your eyes, but it also does the same to your skin as well.

What Exactly Blue Light Does?

Visible light triggers certain skin conditions such as melasma- where the skin is stimulated to produce more pigmentation. As blue light penetrates the skin it reactivates oxygen species which leads to DNA damage thereby causing inflammation and breakdown of elastin, hyperpigmentation, and collagen.

Long exposure can cause skin damage, including colour changes, inflammation, photo-ageing, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. Protecting your skin against blue light is a priority that should be added to everyone’s list. A new pattern of hyperpigmentation has been found and is coming from holding a cell phone to our face. On the other hand, Melasma is now often more on the sides of the face than on the cheeks, where it had been most common. You might have noticed recently some of our favorite skin-care brands have launched blue-light-fighting products. So, the best evidence is that blue light contributes to brown spots on the skin and possibly to photo ageing which leads to wrinkles and skin laxity.

How Can We Protect Our Skin From Blue Light Damage?

Similar to UVA and UVB rays, try and limit your exposure to high energy visible light. You can invest in skincare products that are made to protect your skin from blue light exposure. Apart from that, now we know that mobile phones emit dangerous radiation, it is also advisable to use a handsfree headset but ideally a wired one. Every 15-20 minutes, try to look away from your screen for 30 seconds. And before you go to bed, make it a habit of not touching your phone for an hour. If you are outdoors or indoors, you should be wearing a moisturizer that contains SPF in it or just apply sunscreen. The same rule also applies to wearing makeup with SPF in it. Apart from that, as we have mentioned there are products in the beauty market that contain ingredients that can protect your skin from blue light exposure, add them to your cart now!
